My orchid has finished flowering what do I do now?

Cut the old bloom off the plant down at the base. The plant should rest now until spring when it will start growing again.



Make sure it has light but no sun. Water only when it feels bone dry (lift the pot and feel the weight). Never over water. Orchids are air plants and do best in pots with holes all over it. Water in the morning (so that the plant has time to absorb it all over the course of the day) and shake the pot to get rid of all excess water.



Humidity is always important - best way to do that is to place it in a dish filled with stones and water (make sure the water doesn't touch the bottom of your pot and keep the water level up). A daily misting will make your plant very happy, but isn't as effective as the stone/water dish which is a must.



Don't fertilize it until Spring, and when you do buy some special orchid fertilizer (even WalMart has it).



In the summer you can place your orchid outside, making sure she's in the shade and never gets sun. The morning dew and breezes will do wonders for the plant. Watch that the temperatures do not drop below 50F.



Orchids bloom once a year, usually from November to January. Treat her well and she'll bloom happily and thrive for many years to come.
