I assume this is the the type of cross it is, but I don't know the type, so I don't know how much light, water, soil etc. to give it. Also, I don't know if I should cut the stalks off. The leaves are still healthy. Help!
I need help with my orchid. The flowers are long gone and the stalks are turning brown.?
It's happens to be a Phalaenopsis/Doritaenopsis hybrid. You have to treat is like a Phalaenopsis. If the flower spike(stalk) is brown then cut it off with a sharp pruner about 2 inches from the plant.
Light - Indirect bright light North-east window.
Water/Soil - Fluoride, chlorine, and dissolved salts in tap water will kill an Orchid albeit slowly so use Distilled or reverse osmosis water only with Orchid plant food or African violet plant food 1/4 of the recommended dose per gallon. Watering practice depends on the media the plant is in:
a) Bark - Soak the bark in plain distilled water once a month for about 15 min to hydrate the bark. Use a water bottle sprayer to mist the whole plant daily in the morning. In the winter months do this only once per week.
b) Moss - Soak the moss in the summer but let the moss dry out in between, mist the leaves daily. Do not soak in winter months.
Do not let the roots sit in water.
The roots are your best indicator of health. If it gets pruny or brown it needs more humidity or there's too much fertilizer or dissolved salt in the water.
Hope this helps.
