How do I take care of an orchid -- the type is Phalenopsis.?
Phalenopsis are really easy to grow. They do best in a window with indirect sun. A south facing window can be a bit too bright and I don't recommend artificial light, since flowering is in response to changes day length. Water them when dry and place the pot on top of a tray of water with pebbles in it. The water provides extra humidity, while the pebbles keep the pot above the water line so you plant does not get water logged.



They generally flower in the fall and can be kept blooming for quite a while. After it finishes flowering if you cut the flower stalk a little above the first node below the first flower (start at the position of the first flower and go down the flower stalk until you see a little thing that looks like a scale, that will be the correct node) it will sprout a new flower stalk and continue blooming. This process can be repeated several time leading to a greatly increased bloom time.
