How can i make an orchid plant re-flower?

I was a caregiver for a beautiful little lady and she just loved her orchids but couldn't get them to re-flower for love or money but she had a lady friend that took them home, left them in the same container and cut them down to the dirt and put into a dark closet until a few months went by then brought it out and began the little watering process with them and their little heads start popping but there is something about the dark and being cut down that is the main secret then tender loving care.

Depends on the orchid. I have a phalaenopsis... once the blooms were finished, I cut the stem down to about an inch from the top bud... a few weeks later - more flowers! I didn't do anything else special, I just treat it like any other house plant.
