How do I save it? I think I over watered it.....
My phalaenopsis orchid's blooms are wilting and falling off. Is it dying?
It's ok. Your orchid is probably just done blooming on that stem. You'll want to trim that stem and in about a year you'll have another stem that will bloom.
Check out this link for more info.
Reply:If the leaves are still thick and sturdy, not limp, and a healthy-looking green, the plant is fine- it's just done flowering. Most common varieties of Phals usually flower once a year; you'll see a new bloom spike starting in late spring/early summer next year if the plant stays happy.
Chronic overwatering is probably one of the leading causes of orchids dying... #2 being underwatering. Either way, the leaves will go limp and not look good. Anyway, they're sturdier than they look.
The American Orchid Society has some good care sheets:
http://www.orchidweb.org/aos/uploadedfil...
Reply:if it's been in bloom for months, it's just finished and dropping the flower, so cut the stem at the base and care for it the same way. I start to fertilize now, and usually have flowers twice a year, never fertilize while it is in bloom.
Reply:no there has to be some parasite on the roots
jst dig the soil around it a bitand see if there are any fungus growths
if so u can change the soil

Characteristics of orchid in singapore?
Dear need_2_study,
You may wish to look up various books written about Orchids covering Singapore and Southeast Asia (or keyword Malaya), we have some recommendations like Growing Tropical Orchids by Lee Fong Ying (recently published in 2007), or A guide to the wild orchids of Singapore by Peter O'Bryne (2005) or Orchid hybrids of Singapore: 1893-2003 by John Elliot (2005).
If you are interested in only the National Flower Vanda Miss Joaquim, we would recommend that you consider the book Biology of Vanda Miss Joaquim by Hew Choy Sin (2002).

Do all orchid's need to be put in sunlight part of the day?
actually they like filtered sun most of the day if possible.
Do all orchid's need to be put in sunlight part of the day?
I keep mine near a window on the South side of the house. This gives them indirect sun and they seem to grow well.
Reply:I keep mine in curtian filtersed light in an east facing window so that it gets the morning sun.

Characteristics of orchid tree (anacacho)?
to be planted in San Antonio, Tx 78229
Characteristics of orchid tree (anacacho)?
Scientific name: Bauhinia spp.
Pronunciation: bah-HIN-ee-uh species
Common name(s): Orchid-Tree
Family: Leguminosae
USDA hardiness zones: 9B through 11 (Fig. 2)
Origin: not native to North America
Uses: deck or patio; shade; specimen; reclamation; street without sidewalk; parking lot island %26lt; 100 sq ft; parking lot island 100-200 sq ft; parking lot island %26gt; 200 sq ft; tree lawn 3-4 feet wide; tree lawn 4-6 feet wide; tree lawn %26gt; 6 ft wide; highway median
Availability: not native to North America
Use and Management
Growing best in full sun or high, shifting pine shade, orchid tree thrives in any well-drained soil but in alkaline soils will show interveinal chlorosis (yellowing) on the leaves. The flowers are followed by many brown, woody, 12-inch-long seed pods which are unattractive on the tree and a nuisance when they drop. The wood tends to be weak and sprouts are often seen growing from the base of the tree creating an unkempt appearance. Some people consider the fallen leaves messy because they are large and decompose slowly.
In flower, orchid tree makes a beautiful street tree affect with foliage and flowers arching over the road. However, the drooping branches must be removed as they develop, to allow for vehicle clearance beneath. Because sprouts will have to be removed regularly and the tree is bare for a month or two, this is considered by many to be a high-maintenance tree not suited for large-scale street tree planting. But it is a tough tree growing in most soils with pH below 7.5.
Many species, cultivars, and varieties are available. Bauhinia blakeana , the Hong Kong Orchid-Tree, is seedless and would not present such a litter problem. It is also the most spectacular and most wanted Bauhinia spp., bearing six-inch, orchid-like flowers of rich reddish or rose purple during the winter but is very tender to freezing temperatures. Bauhinia variegata , most popular, produces in winter and spring most nearly orchid-like blossoms of purplish casts or pure white in cultivar `Candida'. Bauhinia purpurea , most variable, produces narrow-petaled, red-purple to blue-purple flowers in late fall and early winter while leaves are on the trees. Bauhinia monandra produces pink, single-stamened flowers all summer. Bauhinia acuminata also blooms all summer but with white flowers. Bauhinia aculeata , with white flowers, is hardy as far north as hardiness USDA hardiness zone 8b but has a tendency to produce many root suckers.
Propagation is by seeds, or cuttings for the rare types.
Pests
Chewing insects and borers may present a problem for Orchid-Tree.
Diseases
No diseases are of major concern. Interveinal chlorosis occurs on high pH soil from micronutrient deficiency

Help...Phalaenopsis Orchid?
I have twelve phals BS and near BS sitting on a stand by the window and for some reason they all have like a purple red wine colour on the under side of the leaves. I don't know if its getting too much sun exposure. Plants are located on the east side of the window. I water them two times a week when spahgnum moss is near dry and fertilizer on the second week with 1/4 strength 20-20-20. I hung a plastic sheet on the window to reduce sun light intensity. I just can't figure out why this is happening to my phals, if you have an answer, please let me know.
thanks
Help...Phalaenopsis Orchid?
I would say that you are doing everything RIGHT!! My Phals are also in a East facing window and they LOVE it. If they look like they are shriveling, then I would move them out of the window!
Make sure that your plants get enough humidity!! I put rocks in the saucers under my Phals and then fill the saucers with water!!
Good Luck!!
Reply:Direct sunlight will often turn phalaenopsis leaves reddish. I've had phals on a window sill with direct afternoon sun, and besides a slight leaf color change and faded flowers, they were fine. Unless the plant appears to be suffering, I wouldn't worry about it.
You also might want to do a check for bugs. There's an off chance that they could be affecting the leaves.

What is orchid?
orchid, popular name for members of the Orchidaceae, a family of perennial herbs widely distributed in both hemispheres. The unusually large family (of some 450 genera and an estimated 10,000 to 17,500 species) includes terrestrial, epiphytic (see epiphyte), and saprophytic (subsisting on decomposing material) genera. Although the latter may sometimes lack chlorophyll, none is actually parasitic. Orchids grow most abundantly in tropical and subtropical forests, where they are largely epiphytic; the temperate genera thrive in all kinds of shaded habitats except excessively dry or cold ones. Most temperate orchids and all those of Arctic are terrestrial.

An orchid is a tropical plant. I'm not sure about planting them since their roots need air to live. Notice your orchids are probably not planted in potting soil. Mine are rooted on bark chips and covered with moss.

Can an orchid miss its bloom season?
i have a cym. maurrine carter, when is the time for them to bloom..am using a bloom buster right know in December, but i have not seen any signs of flower spike...does any body know what time of year they bloom in california.
Can an orchid miss its bloom season?
The season depends upon the variety of cymbidium. In addition to the usual cool season bloomers, there are now also heat tolerant varieties.
In my climate, I've never had luck with cymbidiums. If I leave them outside until it's cold enough for them to initialte spikes, they end up freezing. The heat tolerant varieties just produce foliage for me.
But yes, It's possible to miss just one season and resume blooming. Also check on fertilizing it.
Good luck!
Reply:Orchids generally come up in mid to late spring. It's too early.
Reply:It's still a little early here in So. Cal. for blooming time but then again orchids are much like cats in that they do what they want when they want so "typical" really does not apply. And yes orchids will not bloom if condtons are not right. To hot, to cold, not enough filtered lght, to much direct light all will affect the bloom cycle. I have some that bloom twice a year, some that bloom in the fall and some that just plain skipped a year only to be spectacular the following year.

What does Orchid White Incing taste like???
Is it like fondant, because I want to use it as fondant. Any answers would be appreciated Thanks
What does Orchid White Incing taste like???
I have never heard of orchid white icing. If you'e wanting to use fondant hough but are tuned off by the taste you should know about a better tasting alternative. You can make fondant out of marshmallows and powdered sugar. Here is a link for an instructional video on how to make it. The recipe calls for about 2 lbs. of sugar. I highly recommend this fondant because you sill get the same great look but with a delicious taste that your guests wont peel away.

Is my Orchid sick? (photo)?
I bought it about a week ago and it had three open flowers, which closed up yesterday, so i clipped them off... I don't even know if I was supposed to do that? So, the other unopened flowers are now turning yellow, which I'm assuming is a bad thing.

(bloomed flowers that closed and i cut, stalks turning yellow)

My guess is that it's dying already, but someone told me that it was just dry. though the bark was still moist, i submersed the roots in water, drained it, and placed it back on the rocks-over-water thing it has. it was the first time i had watered it since buying it. the plant has 'air roots' and the bottom leaves are green and healthy, so i thought it was doing alright, until the yellowness started about two days ago. is there something i'm doing wrong?
Is my Orchid sick? (photo)?
Orchids need extremely good drainage while at the same time, high humidity. The planting medium must be very coarse %26amp; acidic. Gentily remove it from its medium %26amp; examin the roots to see if they are rotten or are coated in a white, powdery substance. If so, properly mix a mild fungacide with the correct amount of water in an old , clean windex spray bottle %26amp; spray the roots or coat them in fungicidal powder. Keep the root exposed %26amp; treat as directed. Maintain moisture by misting root %26amp; leaves several times throughout the day. When root appears healed, replant in medium (that is if it was originally in a medium-a good medium can be made up of wood chips, pearlite, sphagnum moss %26amp; activated carbon-all in very coarse grade. Fill a small, shallow tray with pebbles or marbles %26amp; water. Place the potted plant on top of pebbles to maintain proper humidity level. Place in bright indirect light in an area with good air circulation. You can spray fertilize with Miracid at 1/4 strength. Good luck!
Reply:It's time to bloom just might be over. If it is to lose it's flowers, wait to cut it back. (The Stalk) It might re-bloom new flowers. Many of mine have. Then after about a month, cut the stalk back only to where the first flower grew on it.It should sprout a new flower bud. After flowering, they go into a sleeping stage. Do not feed them at this time, but continue to feed once it has started growing again. Do not transplant for about 11/2 - 2 years.Water only once a week by filling the sink with water all the way to the top of the rim of the pot,and let soak for fifteen minutes. Use only warm water, never cold. It should be alright. If the color is a real dark green, then that means it is sick .I wouldn't worry. Byee
Reply:Try this site. At the bottom it talks about "bud blasting" which could be what you have.

Reply:No - it's not 'sick'.
Just a natural reaction to being moved out of the growing area into a completely different environment.
Cut the flower spike all the way off - repot into a slightly larger pot.
See source for more information and instructions.
Reply:Looks like it is aborting its flowers, may have been shocked from different light conditions or probably could have been lack of water in the root zone or humidity in the air.
As long as the leaves and stems stay healthy it should flower again next year. The stems are like the humps on camels and should be fat and full of water. If they start to wrinkle the plant has problems with its roots and not enough soil moisture.
I normally water my new orchids every second day, sometimes more often depending on the temperature.
As long as the potting mix lets the water run out, you should be able to water quite frequently until the plant settles in and then you can water once or twice a week.

I am about to buy vanda orchid. I have already killed three. What do I have to do to keep them alive??
I bought 3 vanda orchids from ebay. They were seedlings. I have killed them off. I put them in the correct soil for orchids and misted them daily on a sunny window sill. Any tips to keep them alive would be most appreciated - I would talk to them if that would help!!!!!

i was told not to put them in any soil. put it in a teak wooden basket with maybe a little spanish moss. if you are in a warm climate right now, hang it on a tree branch outside, where it gets dappled sunlight, but not direct. bring it inside when the temps start to drop into the mid 50's at night. indoors hang it in a southern exposure window, but perhaps with a light filtering shade so it's bright but not direct. mist daily and, inside or out, once a week, mist with a weak orchid fertilizer. (think, "weakly weekly) i bought a small starter one in march and it is slow growing but still alive. i was told it would take 3-5 years to bloom.
Reply:Stop buying them.
Reply:go on line type vanda orchid and you will get all the info you need
Reply:If you are a beginner to orchids, you may want to start with a different variety. Vanda orchids usually like a lot of sun compared to many other varieties. Additionally, seedlings might need more specific care. If you want to buy orchids, it is often better to go where you can actually see the plants for yourself. You can also purchase from well-thought-of orchid nurseries, who will help you with tips and information on growing your plants. Even Meijer stores and Lowes stores sell some orchid plants. A good beginning plant to grow is the Phalenopsis. This plant is usually sold at blooming-size, or very near blooming-size, and does not have such high light requirements as Vandas do. If you still want to buy a Vanda orchid, purchase one that is larger, because a seedling size Vanda will take quite awhile before it is ready to bloom, even in the best of enviroments (a greenhouse). Try purchasing a book about orchids, go to a local orchid show, or visit an orchid greenhouse (one really large grower is located in the greater-Chicago area). You might even like to become a member of your local Orchid Society, and you will get all the advice you want, at their meetings. Good luck with your hobby.

Is orchid a negative energy?
No, it's a positive energy if you are open to it.
In ancient times, orchids were an important ingredient in love potions. Long a fertility symbol and aphrodisiac, orchids were also associated with abundance and good luck.
The orchid has several deep and long-standing meanings. Ironically, some of those meanings are overtly masculine in nature, while others are feminine.
On the masculine side, the name “orchis” itself stems from the Greek word meaning testicle, and is associated with the flower because of the shape of the tuberoids which grow on the roots. Though approximately 30,000 species of orchids exist, many have an erect stem in the center which resembles a phallus. Among multiple meanings, one meaning the Chinese associate with the orchid is the “Perfect Man.”
On the feminine side, the orchid is also a symbol of beauty, charm, and refinement.
Perhaps it is those meanings which combine the masculine and feminine that best represent the orchid flower. In Confucian teachings, the orchid was the symbol for numerous progeny. It was considered a love potion and aphrodisiac in many countries, including Egypt, Germany, China, and Africa.
Most interpretations associated with the orchid relate to sexuality and procreation.
Orchids lead us to the light within. That part of us we often fear more than our darkness.
As orchids can awaken us to our evolutionary gifts and clear illusion, they ground us in earthly life. They spiritualize our sexuality with a focus on the heart and open us to deeper union with ourselves and others. They also have the ability to focus our energy towards wholeness and higher understanding (intuition).
Is orchid a negative energy?
I think no.
Reply:No. The Orchid is a symbol of perfection. For centuries, the orchid has been a symbol of love, luxury and beauty. To the early Greeks, the orchid represented virility, and the Chinese called it "the plant of the king's fragrance." During the Middle Ages, the orchid was considered an aphrodisiac and was used in love potions.
In Greek culture, parents believed they could control the sex of their unborn children with orchid roots. If the father ate large, new tubers, the child would be male; if the mother ate small tubers, the child would be female. European scholars believed that orchids sprang from ground on which animals had bred. They were thought to be the food of satyrs and powerful aphrodisiacs. In ancient China and Japan they were revered for their esthetic and artistic value. Confucius compared the orchid flower to the superior man and its scent to the pleasures of friendship. In modern times the genus Paphiopedilum was named for Phaphos, a temple where the love goddess Aphrodite was worshipped.
Orchids have been used as a source of food, medicines, religious charms, adhesives, perfumes, straw, and flavorings—vanilla being the most widespread—as well as aphrodisiacs. They are thought to cure fever, arthritis, dysentery, cough, headaches, and wounds in many parts of the world. They are made into a remedy for sick elephants in Malaysia and a kind of ice cream in Turkey (where its name means “fox testicles”) that is said to prevent cholera, heal the spleen, and ease childbirth.

My orchid has finished flowering what do I do now?
Cut the old bloom off the plant down at the base. The plant should rest now until spring when it will start growing again.
Make sure it has light but no sun. Water only when it feels bone dry (lift the pot and feel the weight). Never over water. Orchids are air plants and do best in pots with holes all over it. Water in the morning (so that the plant has time to absorb it all over the course of the day) and shake the pot to get rid of all excess water.
Humidity is always important - best way to do that is to place it in a dish filled with stones and water (make sure the water doesn't touch the bottom of your pot and keep the water level up). A daily misting will make your plant very happy, but isn't as effective as the stone/water dish which is a must.
Don't fertilize it until Spring, and when you do buy some special orchid fertilizer (even WalMart has it).
In the summer you can place your orchid outside, making sure she's in the shade and never gets sun. The morning dew and breezes will do wonders for the plant. Watch that the temperatures do not drop below 50F.
Orchids bloom once a year, usually from November to January. Treat her well and she'll bloom happily and thrive for many years to come.

I think you keep them and don't they flower again next year?
Reply:Wait till next year.

Cutting Orchid Stem....?
Where exactly were you suppose to cut after it stops flowering?.....
Ochid has dropped all of the flowers.... and now i have a stem which is quite long.... reading from what people say ... ."Cut the stem" but exactly where from?... and is it the stem of the flower stick (or shall i call this stem)...or is it the plant it self?....
is the cut from bottom or top?...
Finally... how long will it take to flower again.... and how do i keep it!
Cutting Orchid Stem....?
I am not an expert, I am just speaking from experience. When my orchid dropped its petals, I just trimmed of the tip at an angle and left it in the window and seldomly watered. About a month or so later, I got a new beautiful shoot.....it grew a lot lower than where I cut. If you look at the stem and see the darker green "ridges" this is where the new sprout came out. The orchid has to be the most fascinating flower to watch bloom.
Reply:You need to cut just above the node which is the bit on the stem that looks like it should have grown into a leaf but didn't- this should encourage new growth from there and more flowers. I did this on mine and got new flowers a couple of months later.
Reply:Cut down from the top, just above the 4th node.
Reply:half middle way .. be careful
Reply:Cut approx 10cm from base.
The plant should put on leaf now. When it produces a central leaf - as opposed to peripheral ones, re-pot, but only into a marginally bigger pot, with new orchid compost. Water sparingly as before, feed as before, should flower within a year.

My orchid will only grow new leaves & now the roots are growing like crazy - how can I get it to bloom?
Orchid fertilizers will help with the bloom. They are very temperamental,so watch the the temps and sunlight.
My orchid will only grow new leaves %26amp; now the roots are growing like crazy - how can I get it to bloom?
I can help you, my mom is an orchidiologist or whateva they r called, but I have to know what kind of orchid is that... it it a Cattleya or a Laelia or Phalaenopsis or what? It may need more light or fertizer.
Contact me if u want more details aoc10010001100@yahoo.com code10100@hotmail.com
For a phalaenopsis you need 17-17-17 or 20-20-20 fertilizer, fertilize it once a month (a little little spoon per each 5liters of water) and put it in a lighty place but not under sun, it may be behind a window that receives sun light of morning only, middleday light will damage it.
(the fertilizant I am talking about is not animal poop, it is a special color powder with a formula 17-17-17 that you have to solve with water and then put it to the plant)
Reply:Phalaenopsis orchids usually bloom in the winter and spring. A change in day length at the winter solstice (around Christmas) triggers flower spike initiation. Patience is required. Orchids need adequate light to bloom. You are in luck since moth orchids require fairly low levels of light to bloom successfully. New leaves should mature to be larger in size than the previous leaf. Leaves should be thick and leather. Limp leaves are a sign of too little light. Plant lights (4 tubes of 4 ft fluorescent grow lights or balanced daylight spectrum) work well in supplementing daylight in the house. If the plant is vigorously growing and has enough light, it should generate one or two bloom spikes in the winter.
Reply:You may try replanting it. They have special dirt ( I found mine in Walmart) just for orchids. Your pot should be at least 1 inch bigger. Keep it moist and fertilize it monthly with Peters fertilizer. I have good luck with it. Before you transplant it be sure to run alot of water through it. Fertilizers build up and need to be flushed out every so often. Good luck!
Reply:Phalaenopsis orchids need indirect sunlight. They do well in eastern light. Another important condition for blooming is a tempurature swing of about 10 to 15 degrees between night and day. In other words, the nighttime temp where you have your orchids should drop 10 to 15 degrees at night or you may never see blooms.

My orchid plant has lost all its flowers. Will it bloom again? What do I do in the meantime?
It will bloom again. You should use this time to repot the orchid into a larger pot using special orchid soil (you can find it almost anywhere). Be sure to water it regularly and give it nutrient supplements too.
My orchid plant has lost all its flowers. Will it bloom again? What do I do in the meantime?
Genrally speaking, unless you are an orchid expert who spends hours devoted to raising them and making them bloom, you will probably never see that flower bloom again. But you can try. Just keep on watering it and giving it shadey sun.

Phalaenopsis Orchid help! How do I trim it back so it will re-bloom and also how and when do I fertilize it?
Trim the bloom stalk off when all flowers have died off. When the flowers are gone and there is only leaves then fertilze according to your orchid fertilizer brand. I do this and have had reblooms every year for years.
Phalaenopsis Orchid help! How do I trim it back so it will re-bloom and also how and when do I fertilize it?
When the blooms of your Phalaenopsis orchid have faded, you can cut the spike above the highest node. If you are lucky, this will cause the plant to develop a new flower spike... But honestly... It'll produce less flowers on the new spike... Why don't you just remove the whole thing and fatten up your plant for the next big bunch of blooms?... Having flowers is nice but having Bigger blooms is much more fun...
Reply:There is nothing to trim except perhaps the old flowerspike.
Knock out of pot - pull off any old leaves that are growing beneath new roots. Repot in fresh medium.

My orchid plant has orange streaks on its leaves i have been cutting off the leaves??
It sound like you are either over watering it, or not watering it enough, once a week should be fine and make sure all water drains out, fertilize about every third to fourth watering.
My orchid plant has orange streaks on its leaves i have been cutting off the leaves??
Are they yellow streaks? Sound like maybe too much water.

It's dying
Reply:too much water
Reply:Thats means you going to DIE! Or your orchid is.
Reply:Sounds like a Democrat plant since they generally turn yellow and go soft . You will need to go to the store and find a Conservative Republican Orchid . Ask the salesperson if they are a Democrat. If so , find another store.
Reply:Overwatering can cause this. Make sure there is ample drainage if they are in a pot. Hope this helps!
Reply:over watering, use pourous dirt to drain away water so it does not pool..too much water makes most plants have yellow or limp leaves.

Moth orchid - the flowers have wilted as if finished blooming. what can be done?
I assume it needs to be dead headed, but where and how.
Moth orchid - the flowers have wilted as if finished blooming. what can be done?
Just cut off the spike near the base of the plant. It is done for this season.
See source for general information on caring for phalaenopsis orchids
Reply:Moth Orchids or Phalaenopsis, typically reflower on existing stems - so I leave cutting mine until they start to die back, showing that they have finished. Just remove each individual flower as it dies, (each flower has a little stem that connects it to the main flowering stem) and leave the main stem intact until it has died back.
Sometimes the tip will die-back, though it might still produce a shoot from the flower stem, a little lower down: so just cut-off the dead portion of the stem.
I had some luck yesterday, a local florists was selling these at 99 pence each, where the flowers were almost over! The plants were strong and healthy, so will live for many years to come.
It's occasionally possible to have flowers from the same flower stem for almost a year.
Good luck! Rob
Reply:I have had success with going three knuckles from the baase of the plant
Reply:I always cut orchid stems down to just above first knuckle. That stem does not produce again but a new stem will grow

Should I trim the stem back or just leave it? will it be able to rebloom?
My Orchid (Phal) accidentally had a bag dropped on it and the flowers snapped off, how should i care for it??
Actually if those flowers have been in the plant for quite a while then it was good that those flowers went away since After flowering it is proper to remover the old flowers. The best for you to do its to leave it like that , because you never know if trimming will actually get things worse ,
if the pseudobulb from which the inflorescence grow is damaged , then the plant will get sick
Reply:I would leave it be, the flower spike will turn brown, and become brittle, just cut that part off in time, I have had one that produced another flower spike, and one that produced a kiki (baby orchid) off the old spike.

Reply:I would leave it be, the flower spike will turn brown, and become brittle, just cut that part off in time, I have had one that produced another flower spike, and one that produced a kiki (baby orchid) off the old spike.

Why orchid flower has so much value?
because they are very difficult to grow
anything that takes time and effort has value
Why orchid flower has so much value?
they take so so long to grow, they might take from 6 to 12 months!!!!!!!!!
Reply:some orchid plants bloom up to 5 months at a time. unless you are very knowledgable, your orchid will usually only bloom once a year. the wait is so long %26amp; when it finally blooms, you are in awe of it.their flowers are so exotic looking %26amp; often conjure up memories of romatic vacations.

Is Orchid or Typha or Neem or Eucalyptus or Pine is common in wetlands?
Typha is a wetlands plant.
Is Orchid or Typha or Neem or Eucalyptus or Pine is common in wetlands?
Typha, also known as Cat-tail is a wetland species (I did research on it-- this one grows in ditches all over south Louisiana, definitely a wetland species).
Pines are found in bottomland hardwood forests and Pine savannahs. Some wetland restorationists say bottomland hardwood forests are wetlands, since they are located along rivers and w/in the flood stage (therefore, hold several feet of water at various times of the year.)
Neem is a sub-arid and sub-humid tree which is tropical or subtropical %26amp; thrives in sandy or well-drained soils. I believe it's from India--- I've never seen it in marshes or swamps among Louisiana or Mississippi; however, I have read a paper about it's growth among wetland soils (if I remember correctly, the study was done in Florida).
Orchids are found in several habits, including wetlands.
There are some wetland species of Eucalyptus-- the ones I know of are in Hawaii (they are also in the family Myrtaceae and I believe they are in the genus Eucalyptus).
Reply:I would guess Typha or Neem b/c Eucalyptus is tropical and Pines would probably drown and orchid likes to dry out after it is moist.
Reply:I've seen orchids and pines in wetlands, although pines don't do really well there. I don't know what the other two are...sorry!
Reply:I've never seen Pine or Eucalyptus in wetlands. I've seen them near wetlands but never in them.

How can I dry or otherwise preserve my orchid?
My husband is in Iraq and had orchids sent to me. (He's SUCH a sweetheart) They are so beautiful, and I really want to save them. I have dried roses in the past, but I'm not sure if orchids will work out the same. I've tried to find information by doing a search online, but all I find is how to care for potted orchids.
If anyone can tell me how to save at least one of these flowers, please let me know! Thank you!
How can I dry or otherwise preserve my orchid?
I tried the hanging method, did not work that well for orchids, due to the fact that they are so tender and fragile. I had pressed them in books, and looks great. You can later get them framed.

Reply:After keeping it, put it in a book and leave till it is dried. Then you can have the beautiful flower for a long time. It will be dried flowers.

Orchid Growers: Should the orchid spike be pruned after blooming?
Presently, one blossom remains on a two-foot spike. The plant has done well since before Christmas, but is now in its declining period with no subsequent blooms coming forth.
Orchid Growers: Should the orchid spike be pruned after blooming?
A two foot spike ..... you are so lucky!! Mine don't get that big. I wait until all of the flowers are gone and the spike looks like a dead stick, then I cut it maybe an inch or two away from the plant. I have done this about 4 times on the same orchid and it's blooming now for the fifth time.
Reply:My wife loves the orchid I got her for Christmas and is happy to know she can keep it longer through the pruning process.
Anything to keep her happy . . . Report It
Reply:i cut mine back to about a two inch spike thats what i was to do.it doesnt grow back anything but new shoot grow out close to it
Reply:once the spike turns brown go ahead and cut it off. As long as it is green, there is always a chance it could send out buds again. The type of orchid would definately been helpful, maybe next time.

Lady slipper orchid?
My Paph. has been a real trooper moving with me cross-country, but it this time of change(and I admit some neglet) there were two times where it tried to put out new growth but the new growth ended up dying. Now I'm on the up and up and treating it right but it doesn't look like it's going to put out any new growth. Have I missed my chance? I've been growing orchids for years now so this is a new problem for me. How can I get it to try again for me?

Where can I find Information on specific orchid names and attributes?
I'm looking to find out info on a skinerii Cattleya and other orchids of costa rica. Any Ideas? Fragrance, color, how rare or plentiful, local distributers/growers... Like this kinda info. If ya know or just think ya know plz drop me a line at Sobezander@yahoo.com Hey, Thanks.
Where can I find Information on specific orchid names and attributes?
I'm not a great orchid resource, however, I'm a darned good plant finder!
I typed into my search engine, Michigan orchid, and found that we had a statewide orchid society. That would be my suggestion to you, your state orchid society.
They would be a wealth of info. especially on the care and culture of rare or exotic orchids. They probably will also know where you might be able to find the plants you're interested in.
I hope that this helps
Good luck-
Reply:Mail order catalogues for hobbyists are plentiful along every line you can think of and I'm sure orchids are no exceptions. There are also books which might be found at the library or on-line that catalogue many varieties of interest. Be sure to find out which varieties can be brought to the U.S. legally as well.

Orchid lovers: any natural fertizer for orchids?
I use fish emulsion fertilizer
Orchid lovers: any natural fertizer for orchids?
Fish emulsion fertilizer is something obtained from fish, and it is generally of a much lower concentration nutrition wise compared to "chemical" fertilizer. Report It
Reply:However, if you take normal "chemical" fertilizers and really dilute it, it should be fine for your orchids, since that orchids are already expensive, there is no point in wasting your money on fertilizer that does that exact same thing. Report It

How many orchid stems in a bridal bouquet?
How many stems of orchids would make a nice full bridal bouquet? Only answer if you KNOW what you're talking about.
How many orchid stems in a bridal bouquet?
it would depend on the variety orchid you want. some are larger, some are on large sprays with many blooms......
if you are talking about the orchids that everyone sees around Mother's Day....I would think 4 or 5 would be sufficient for a beautiful bridal bouquet. good luck to you on your marriage!!!

BE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE VOWS THAT YOU'LL MAKE! You are making them for a lifetime,so, be sure that with all that is within you, that you're going to do all that is humanly possible to make this marriage work. To many people take marriage so lightly "O well" if it doesn't work I'll get a divorce. Marriage is something that you have to work at every day. You take the good with the bad, and learn to roll with the punches. Never be to proud to say I'm sorry. And never go to bed angry at your spouse.
Reply:It all depends on the type of orchids you want and how big or small of a person you are. If youare only 5' Tall %26amp; 120 lbs, I wouldn't go with to large of a bouquet because people want to see the bride %26amp; her dress with her beautiful bouquet not just the bouquet. However if you are 5' 9" or 5' 10" you can get away with a larger bouquet. Any good florist will be able to advise you of that...just ask your florist.

An orchid present ?
I was planning to give my last year teacher a Valentine present. My mom was at a flower shop and bought tall fake orchids. It was not very expensive. It is really tall and there is only one stem with the roots and everything. It's flat and looks very real. I was wondering if this gift is very appropiate?
An orchid present ?
I wouldn't really try to. But it's really fine. I would probably try to buy a chocolate rose. It's pretty and very affordable. Im getting the chocolate rose for my teacher. Good luck !
Reply:Sounds good just pack it with plenty of protection so it doesn't break.
Cheers

Reply:If the teacher is a male..it may be awkward for him to accept such a gift...but the fact that it is fake makes it a bit more informal.
If it is for a female teacher...go for it.
I think it's a very considerate and appropriate gift.

Orchid flowers fell off, how do i get them to grow back?
all the leaves and stems are green. how or when will the flowers grow back?
Orchid flowers fell off, how do i get them to grow back?
Much depends on the species of orchid you are growing, but you don't identify it. Best advice is to do a Yahoo search for "orchid care" (include the quotation marks in the search box). It will yield 178,000 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.
Good luck with your search.
Reply:Most orchids only flower once on a stem. A phaleanopsis may produce a secondary flowering branch off of the main flower stem, maybe not.
You ought to go to www.aos.org, determine the kind of orchid you have, then check out their care sheets for the different types.
Reply:CRAZY GLUE.
Reply:Put the plant in a dry cool place (around 50 degrees farenheit is good, but not below freezing), and basically leave it alone. Do not transplant it, do not water it more than once a week, and then just a very small amount. Make sure it is in something that the water drains quickly out of. Do not allow the orchid to stand in water. Many orchids only flower once a year and under cool conditions contrary to what most people believe. (They bloom in tropical winter) Once it does bloom again, keep it in a cool area, and never in full sun. In this way your orchid will hold it's blooms for 6-8 weeks generally. I personally keep my orchids inside my air-conditioned home, when they are in bloom, in front of a window for sunlight, but protected from the extreme heat. My flowers stay intact for a long time.
Reply:You should cut the flower stem back to the 3rd node( bump on the stem), keep it in non direct sunlight and instead of watering like other plants sit it in abowl of lukewarm water for half an hour a week. They prefer to take water that way. you should have new blooms before you know it.
Reply:A little scotch tape will fix it!

Have I damaged my orchid beyond repair? I recently purchased my first orchid, a Phalaenopsis.?
It had 10 beautiful blooms and two unopened ones. I placed it close to a south sliding glass door. One of the unopened blooms opened. It did very well for 7 to 10 days, but I noticed that a couple of leaves were getting dark spots, like it was burning. I read the leaf color if this plant should be light green rather than the very dark emerald green like mines. A week later a spot on one leaf started to lighten. Initially, I gave it very little water. The second watering, 3 or 4 days later, I gave it at least a 1/4 cup tap water.. Now, I know that I have overwatered the plant and probably had it placed wrong (too much indirect light). The leaves have wilted and all except one of the blooms wilted and I think a fungus (white spots on one leaf) was developing. I have cut the wilted leaves and the fungus leaf. My question is, can this plant be saved? I am afraid of damaging it further. Should I place it in darkness for a few days? what should I do?
Have I damaged my orchid beyond repair? I recently purchased my first orchid, a Phalaenopsis.?
One of the 'joys' of owning an orchid is that in the beginning you will kill a few of them. It is normal to do so, and part of the learning process. One of the things I notice about phals is that they are very tolerant of a lot of conditions, except it is really possible to kill it by either rotting the roots or by wetting the crown. Now that the flowers have died off, it's time to look at exposed roots, and every healthy phalaenopsis should have thick green healthy roots that protrude into the air. If those are fine, then mist them daily with a bottle, till the roots turn a bright jade green.
If the roots look weak, or break off easily, the phal may be in serious trouble. Cut the dead roots off deeply and throw the rotten bits away. Give it artificial light with a full spectrum light source, re pot it in standard bark mixture with a few broken pot shards and charcoal (not the BBQ briquettes) thrown in and as they say often, fertilize weekly and weakly with an all round fertilizer. Phals do not have pseudobulbs so they need lots of water but make sure the water drains away easily and never soak them for long periods.
Reply:Thanks for your help both answers given were helpful to me. I have decided that I will sacrific the remaining blooms for the sake of the plants! Thanks Report It
Reply:Don't place it in darkness, but you may want to move it out of direct sunlight as windows can sometimes intensify the heat from the sunlight. Orchids are plants that take their nutrients and water from the air, so it should not be potted in dirt, but rather a loose mix of bark, or something similar. Mist it daily to keep the moisture content up for the entire plant (wilting leaves is an indicator of not enough humidity). I wouldn't recommend cutting the leaves either, as they don't produce them that quickly, and they need those leaves to photosynthesize. It should not be sitting in water either. It's possible it can be saved - you may want to consider sacrificing the blooms to save the plant. This is a good overall site for orchid care. Good luck!

Orchid house/bush house/shade house?
For my birthday i wont a shade house or whtever its name is. Anyways I live in Brisbane. I would like to know were i could buy one, how much do they cost, so yer thanks or should my dad make it for me ?? how could he make it
Orchid house/bush house/shade house?
The first link has kits you can order and the picture shows how they are built, pretty much. The second link sells just the fabric. You dad could build a framework and you could install shade cloth on that, or you can buy the kit and he can help you put it together - depends on how handy he is.

When do I repot my Cattleya Orchid?
I'm a newbie to the wonderful world of Orchids and recently, I purchased a small Cattleya from a local flower store. It was not in bloom and was packaged in netting hanging from a peg on a display stand. The leaves are making it very top heavy and it will not stand upright in the plastic pot that it was packaged with. My question is, do I try to stand the pot up somehow or does it sound like it is ready for a new pot?
When do I repot my Cattleya Orchid?
Often orchids get tippy in pots... tends to be their nature.
They need repotted about every 2-3 years, not due to pot size but because you odn't want the soil breaking down to fine. Orchid soil should be thick, chucky and well draining much like beauty bark almost.
Chances are if you just bought it, it doesn't need repotted. My suggestion would be to find a nice heavy ceramic pot that the smaller plastic pot can sit/nest in, or go to a garden store and they sell orchid pots that are heavier ceramic (but about the same size as you probably currently have) that you could transplant it too for more stability.
or you can prop your current pot up.
Reply:The best time to replant catts is when they are just beginning to show new roots.
If the medium looks OK and there is no new root activity, leave it for now. Put the whole thing into a clay pot or other heavy container for stability.

Why is my orchid plant not getting new growth?
I bought some orchids that were growing from two long stalks where the orchids were clustered towards the distal end but when the flowers eventually fell off I was left looking at two long stalks. I've not noticed any new growth. Any ideas what is going on?
Why is my orchid plant not getting new growth?
Orchids are difficult plants to grow, without the right mixture of nutrients and climate conditions. I recommend reading the following article by the University of Florida for further instructions about light, soil pH and moisture.

How do I care for my orchid?
I got orchids from my husband yesterday for Valentine's Day delivered to my work. I put water and the food in the vase and they look beautiful. Well when I came into work today, they looked alittle welted. Whats wrong?
How do I care for my orchid?
Many ornamental orchids are epiphytic meaning they grow someplace other than in the ground i.e. in trees. Their roots are exposed to the air and they have no soil from which to absorb nutrients. Put yourself in the plants place
you would need to absorb water from the humid air surrounding you and directly from rainfall. You would depend on dust accumulating on your leaves and rainfall for nutrients. So perhaps high humidity, frequent watering in WELL DRAINED soil, and minimal fertilization would be beneficial. Oh yes indirect sunlight depending on species.

I cut one of my Phal. Orchid's stems down after it stopped flowering. It is less green then it was. Is it ok?
I have two Orchids. I'd like to know about this so that I can be prepared for when the next one stops flowering.

Are you saying that the leaves are less green? How many leaves is this happening to? This may be a normal thing. The bottom leaves of the Phalaenopsis die off as new ones grow. Phalaenopsis orchids usually have from four to six leaves and lose one or two each year. It's hard to say what is happening without seeing your orchid, but this may be what is going on.

How do you care for an orchid?
I have several orchids as I find them beautiful but wondering should I cut them back when they've finished flowering or just leave them to rebud again, as one of mine is already doing after I thought it had died? Also, Is it preferable to leave them in transparent tubs and why is this?
How do you care for an orchid?
Consider how orchids grow in the wild: they cling to crooks between branches of trees or in peat moss, and their roots are not really in any soil.
The best thing for orchids is to be planted in orchid bark, but don't bury those tendrils that are probably sticking out of the pot. Doing so will possibly cause them to rot, killing the plant. Never plant in soil - use the orchid bark. If you are considering repotting only because these tendrils are sticking out of the pot, don't. If it's healthy now, it will be just fine with the tendrils overgrowing its pot.
When you water them (about once a week), soak their pot in a tub of water that's bigger than the pot. Completely submerge the pot to the top of the bark for about a half hour, letting the bark become soaked (the water retained in the bark is what the orchid feeds on). Let it drain completely after removing it from the water, before setting it in an outer pot or saucer. This prevents root rot. Once a month, use an orchid food (granules that are mixed into the water).
Don't cut any foliage off unless it's definitely dead. New foliage and/or flower buds will sprout from the base of the plant for the next year's growing cycle. Go ahead and cut off dead flower stems, though.
Orchids are actually pretty hardy little buggers. Probably the most important aspect of orchid care is how much light they need. Some need full, bright light all the time, while others need mostly shade or filtered, indirect light. And, getting it wrong could kill the plant or prevent it from flowering. If you know what type it is (you have the tag that has the scientific name on it), look up that type of orchid on the internet. You'll find all kinds of sites that show how to care for specific kinds of orchids.
Reply:i my self have orchid's and i was told that when they die off ( lose there petals) place them in a warm and moist room and leave them there until they flower again. leave the old stocks to dry out and they will fall off in their own time new ones will re flower. i ain't quite sure when we leave them in the clear pots but i like it. don't cut the air roots of and water them when they are dry and also in the warm moist room, used rain water if possible
Reply:No - you never 'cut back' an orchid like you would a rosebush.
It would help to know what species of orchid you have.

I need Osmunda fast. Have three orchids in hanging baskets that need to be re-potted and I cannot find Osmunda anywhere.
Please help.
If you have a web site I could order from please submit and let me know.

I use it in my aquariums, didn't know it was hard to get. I bought a 40 lb. bale years ago and still have some, but they're expensive. Try this link for smaller quantity http://www.secretgardenrareplants.com/ca... RScott
Reply:You want sphagnum moss to plant orchids in, you can find it at most stores that sell house plant supplies. You can buy it online but the shipping cost more than the moss usually.

How do I find out what type of orchid is growing in my garden when there are so many different types.?
My orchids live outdoors and survive winters down to 25 degrees. They have 12 - 16 in. leaves and 2 in. white flowers with purple in the center and yellow spots. I believe they are terrestrial orchids and like the rich organic soil benieth my oak trees. They multiply quickly and require little maintenance.

Lower ph in water for orchid plants?
I am looking for ways that are not harmful to orchids to lower my ph to around 5.7.I am getting a ''ph pen'' and trying to figure out how to analyse water breakdowns giving by my state agriculture dept. such as what is acceptible for orchids.Knowing that is a rather broad question because of the variety of orchids,is there a book that could be helpful? I am growing a large variety from cattlyas,phalaenopsis,gongorias,paphs.ph... etc.thanks for any suggestions-Lee
Lower ph in water for orchid plants?
You could mix your tapwater with rainwater or distilled water not only would that lower Ph but also the hardness, which in my opinion is the bigger issue when growing orchids. You could also try passing the water through some peat moss for a while, the tanins in it will reduce the ph to some degree. Usually Ph from tapwater is adequate for orchids but the minerals in the water gradually accumulate in the substrate and cause the roots to "burn", the solution here : simply water the plant with rainwater / distilled (very generously)once in a while to leach out the minerals

Cymbidia, cattalea, paphlopedia, and moth orchids....love them, they are no more than weeds, do very well with minimal care.
Reply:Cymbidia are my favorite, but i must stink at taking care of them, b/c mine died. They were a really pretty purple though.

How long can an Orchid (Or another flower) last submerged under water?
I want to create a floral fish display, with a submerged flower anchored down in small glass pebbles and a floating candle on top with little fish swimming around the submerged flower. I have spoken to the Pet Shop man and bought appropriate little fish, and have safe floating candles. All thats left is I'm not sure how often I would have to replace a submerged flower, I'm thinking of using orchids. any ideas which flowers would last longest under water?

All organics including flowers will sufficate when immersed. I am sure you would not want to deal with the rot and decay.
There are realistic plastic and/or silk flowers that would do the job.
Reply:Each condition is different. You will only find your answer if you try out your ideas.

Can I save my orchid?
My orchids blooms have fell off and there is only one leaf left. I'm not sure what happened to it it was doing great! Is there anyway I can bring it back, and if so what do I need to do?
Can I save my orchid?
if it's been in the same pot for awhile( a few years) then re pot it to refresh the soil! keep it away from all windows cuz the sun will fry the poor little girl if it's too close, about three feet from the window is fine! no fertilizer, and water only once weekly! thats all, follow this and it should recover nicely!

What is the meaning of an orchid flower?
This Valentine's Day I'm thinking of giving my significant other a bundle of orchids. I'm just not sure what the meaning of that type of flower is... ?
My friend told me that she watched the movie "The perfect Man" and one of the quotes was, "A woman loves orchids, because they make her feel like she's floating on a cloud of possibility”. ????
Any suggestions?
What is the meaning of an orchid flower?
The orchid is a flower of magnificence that brings a universal message of love, beauty, wisdom, thoughtfulness, luxury %26amp; strength. In China it signifies refinement, and innocence.
A pink orchid conveys pure affection.
The Cattalya orchid denotes mature charm, and is often used in corsages for Mother's Day.

Today, the meanings of orchids are generally regarded as symbolic of rare and delicate beauty.
Orchids are a long-lasting and particularly elegant type of flower, which would make those receiving one as a gift feel especially pampered. Their graceful appearance draws immediate attention, and their reputation as an exotic and unusual flower evokes a sense of refinement and innocence.

The meaning is quite varied and each culture had a different meaning.
Orchids can impart a wide variety of messages, but historically the meanings of orchids have included wealth, love, and beauty. To the ancient Greeks, orchids suggested virility, and after the rise in popularity of orchid collections in Victorian England, the meaning of orchids moved towards being symbolic of luxury. Orchids have ... been believed to carry various healing and protective properties, allowing them to ward off disease. The Aztecs were said to drink a mixture of the vanilla orchid and chocolate to give them power and strength, and the Chinese believe orchids can help cure lung illnesses and coughs.

Orchid pros- what's the best way to sell my expensive orchids?
My dad passed away a while. He left a greenhouse full of expensive, rare orchids. I've posted on Craigslist and a lot of people have come. But one guy just bought almost 5 plants for $55! My dad use to buy plants worth $3000! Each time his friends would come, he'd trade plants for at least $500. I know I'm probably getting ripped off, but what's the best way to sell these plants without having much knowledge? I've heard Ebay was better... please help!

But pls don't continue with craigslist etc., until you have thoroughly evaluated the plants. I couldn't help more because I can't see them .

Repotting Phalaenopsis orchid?
I bought a Phal from Lowes the other day. It's in flower and I know if I repot it now, I will probably lose the blooms, but it has been in this pot for at least a year according to the attached tag, and the potting medium smells mildewy. If I don't repot it now, will the plant die because of the mold? Please advise, I'm a newbie with orchids!
Thanks!
Repotting Phalaenopsis orchid?
If you take it easy on watering, you could wait for maybe a month before deciding to repot. That way if you lose blooms when you DO repot, you'll have had a chance to enjoy it. I stick a wooden skewer, like the kind you use for kabobs (some people just use a pencil) into the media and let it sit for 5 minutes or so, then pull it out to see if it feels moist. If you can't tell, but it feels cool against your cheek or wrist, then you should hold off another day on watering. This may minimize the damage, anyway. Or go ahead and re-pot. You might lose the blooms but you'll know you're getting it into healthy mix. Keep in mind that the orchid has gone through most likely a rough re-potting before being shipped as well as a stressful journey to your store. It's kind of a difficult choice, I'm my opinion. Goodluck!
Reply:What type of medium was used. If you have a place for the orchids to get some fresh air, the smell may go away.
As for repotting go to HGTV gardening by the yard segment. Type is keyword orchids and there is a step by step guide on how to replant your orchids

Reply:Try this website. It is complete with picture guide for repotting the orchid:

My orchid has a lot of roots. Is it suppose to be that way?
I know that there are some orchids that are suppose to be root bound, but I don't know if this one is suppose to be that way. I just got it a couple of weeks ago.
My orchid has a lot of roots. Is it suppose to be that way?
what kind of orchid is it? without knowing the plants it's difficult to say how you should treat it....get the name
orchids do need to be root bound-usually you keep the same pot size for quite a few years before getting a bigger size depending on the kind-i'm guessing you have a Phalaenopsis-it has a couple of pairs of horizontal strap-like leaves that are oblong and the roots are very thick and green/silvery. with those you only go up to a 6 inch pot max-as it grows new leaves and roots the lower part dies so every 6 months or so you can take it out of the pot and cut off all the dead (black, hollow or mushy) roots and dead stem and then you simply put the newer roots in the same pot with new sphagnum moss. you can check now if you want and just trim off anything that looks dead and put the rest back in the pot.
if it is a kind that has swollen bases (pseudobulbs) you wait until there are so many pseudobulbs that they are coming out of the pot before separating them keeping at least 3 pseudobulbs per plant.
Reply:separte some of them and plant them in another planter

My orchid stopped flowering & the stalk is dead but leaves are green - how do i bring it back to flowering?
It is one of thosde orchids with one thin stalk and then you get 3 or 4 flowers on the end of it. I am guessing i should cut it back but have no idea how much.
My orchid stopped flowering %26amp; the stalk is dead but leaves are green - how do i bring it back to flowering?
If you cut the stem back to the second node below the flowers you will have a chance at another flower spike. Since yours is already dead you will need to just cut it off. My phalaenopsis orchid is on its third spike from the original bloom that started last March. Just keep your orchid watered and fertilized and you will get another in about a year. They do best in an area of bright indirect light and a fluctuating day and night temp. Warm during the day and cool at night. Good luck and next flower spike make sure you cut it back to the second node and you may get another flower spike. Here is a site that you may find helpful. Enjoy your blooms!

Reply:Just cut off the stalk at the bottom. Fertilize the green leaves when no blooms present then wait. It can take a full year to get another bloom. Be patient.
Reply:It sounds like you have a phalaenopsis orchid.Cut the flowered stalk down to about 5cm ,then move the plant into a colder room (5-6 degrees colder) for a couple of weeks. This will trick the plant into thinking it is going through a winter.Bring it back into the warmer room and hopefully it will flower again. Good luck!
Reply:They often flower only once a year so don't be too eager. Buy some proper orchid food and give it plenty of light and moisture, not too much don't drown it, it will grow new leaves then another flower spike same time next year. Cut the old ones off.
Reply:Trim the spike down some orchids take a year to rebloom, water every week, fertilize monthly, and keep in bright light, not direct sunlight.
Reply:I'm not an expert but I had one the same. I cut off the stalk and then just left it. Next year a new stalk came and flowered. Did it three times but now it's dead.

Phalaenopsis orchid care?
HOW DO I GROW ORCHIDS IN SHADE TREE
Phalaenopsis orchid care?
Phals are tough to grow outdoors. They need the night temps above 50'F and days below 90'F.
If that is so where you are located, you can attached them to the tree with glue, string or staples until the roots have time to grasp the tree.
Also because they rot if water is sitting in the crown you will need to hang them upside down, which is how they grow in the wild, not upright as you see potted in homes.
If it is not very humid and rainy where you are, put some sphagnum moss around the roots to keep them moist.

Orchid question!?
I am ordering green orchids from the florist to put in my hair for May Day. I will be dancing in 4 performances - 2 on Thursday and 2 on Friday. If I pick up the flowers for BOTH days on Wednesday afternoon and keep them in the refrigerator, will the orchids for Friday still be fresh??? They would have to last for 2 %26amp; 1/2 days.
Please include in your answer how long orchids last, not just if they will be fresh. They won't have stems to soak up water; it will just be the blossoms and nothing else.
Orchid question!?
The Florist, if aware of the circumstances, should be able to give you the best advice. They should already be in bags that are blown up ready for the refrigerator. You should have two sets, one for Thurs, and another for Fri. But the ones you pick up Weds, should last though Fri.
Reply:if you are getting them from the florist they should be in those little water filled tubes, the flowers should have a bit of stem to them. Even so they probably will stay fresh for a few days. When one of mine breaks a stem they last a week or 2 in water. Good luck!
Reply:I would place the end of the flowers in a couple moist paper towels and put them in zip lock baggies blown up with air and keep them cool. My friend did that with an orchid flower when we had to bring in flowers from our house for a horticulture class we were in and it still looked like he had just picked it after a couple weeks. This way should keep them fresh for a long time. Hope this was helpful and good luck with your dances!!

Orchid Virus?
Can humans %26amp; orchids be infected by the same viruses?
Orchid Virus?
No. The antigens that the virus uses to attach to a specific orchid cell wall, are virus must attach to a chemical on the orchid's cell wal in able to penetrte that cell and take over the cell's genome to make virus proteins.
Doc. Dan.
Reply:Hi Chris Although not a virus expert, I would think it is highly unlikely. Probably someone qualified would be able to say for definte. cheers pendelli

Orchid leaf split in half?
I don't know anything about orchids except that they are my favorite flower. My dad bought me one and so far it has been doing very well. Today i noticed one leave has a black line right down the center and is splitting. Why??? I water and fertilize it about once a week. I use the worm poop spray, which i noticed will eat the leaves if sprayed directly on it. Is this the problem?
Orchid leaf split in half?
You need to be using an orchid or cymbidium fertisier because these plants are very diffrent to other plants, they should also be producing airial roots to take mostuer out of the air
Reply:The split in the leaf probably is not important. I wouldn't worry about it. But don't spray fertilizer directly on the leaves unless it is labeled as a foliar fertilizer which I don't think is worm poop (do you mean worm castings?). Mix orchid food with the water you use to water the plant. Follow label instructions. Orchids appreciate being sprayed, but use plain, room temperature water.

Orchid question?
Some of my Orchids don't have flowers. Any suggestions?
Orchid question?
Orchids like warm moist weather and fertilizer could help. The one thing to remember is that most orchids only bloom about once every 6 months. Some varietes only bloom once a year. Orchids are very beautiful and are my favorite flower, but you have to be patient for them to bloom.
Reply:I get that a lot if I leave them out in the cold. The ones closer to a wall and out of the wind get flowers.
Reply:you need to use fertilizer....I used it on my orchid and I have had one set of blooms and one more set on the way. They also need air circulation....like being outdoors, an open window or even a fan...it worked 4 me

How many roots does an orchid need to survive?
I've recently started growing orchids (phals, paphs, cattleyas, dendrobiums and vandas), and I ordered two beautiful orchids from an excellent seller on eBay (past experiences have been great), but was upset to find that all but one of the roots were rotten on both plants. They're both phalaeonopsis. I trimmed all the dead, rotten roots away, but now there's just one healthy one left, and the leaves are looking soft and droopy from lack of support. What can I do to save my orchids?! Is there anything I can put on the roots or the bark to stimulate or expedite new root growth? I'm too new to orchids to know this yet...but they're beautiful plants and I don't want them to die! My favorite one is in spike right now, so I haven't even seen it bloom yet! =(
How many roots does an orchid need to survive?
If there are flower spikes, cut them off.
Use a small pot and repot into fresh orchid seedling mix. If you don't have that, use half and half mixture of orchid mix and peat.
Keep moist - mist leaves (but not the crown) until you see new root activity.
They should produce new roots and you can repot again later in the summer into a larger container.
See source for more info
Reply:Try to get Cactus plant vitamins and mix it with orchid vitamins trusth me its great for your plannts and if youwait a few month i believe you orchids should bud more roots.

Orchid Care?
My boyfriend gave me white orchids for our aniversery. But i dont know how to take care of them. They were wrapped in green tissue paper.Now...i know you can hang roses up-side down and they'll dry like that, but can you do the same with orchids?I want them to last forever, but i dont want the pettles to fall off in a few days.Any help would be great!
Orchid Care?
Hi,
You cannot dry orchids in the same manner that you do roses. Here is some info for you regarding the preservation of orchids. I hope it is helpful to you.
FREEZE DRYING
The best method to preserve a fresh orchids is to freeze dry them. This preserves the fresh flowers exactly in the condition they were when they were frozen. This method is more expensive but produces the best results. Check your local phone book to see if there are freeze drying services in your area.
DRYING AGENTS
If freeze drying is not an option for you the next best drying method is with a flower drying agent. The flowers still tend to look close to the condition they were in when dried. Craft stores sell flower drying agents with the most popular being silica gel powder. To dry orchids you put the item in a airtight container and completely cover with the silica gel powder and then seal in the container. Check after 2 days to see if needs additional drying time.
AIR DRYING
Air drying is the worst method of preserving orchids. The flowers typically continue to decay while they are air drying so they start to brown and shrivel up. It typically takes a month for orchids to fully air dry.
Best wishes!

Reply:Light and Ventilation:
Most cultivated orchids can be grown in a sunny window or under lights. Either plant lights or a combination of cool white (fluorescent) and warm white will do. Many orchid enthusiasts grow their plants in or near a window with supplemental lighting. Orchids need humidity levels of 45-65%, easily obtained on pebble trays. Fill a tray with stones and water. Set the plants on the stones so that the pot bottoms rest just above the water line. Misting on sunny days will help, just be sure that plants are dry by evening. Orchids do best with good ventilation, as do most house plants. You could use a small fan to provide extra ventilation if needed.
Water:
Orchids need good drainage and should be watered only when dry. Many orchids have pseudobulbs which store water like succulents and cactus. Orchids with pseudobulbs (such as Cattleyas) should go totally dry between watering. Orchids without pseudobulbs (such as phalaenopsis, vandas, and paphiopedilums) should be watered when moderately dry. Orchids use more water when they are actively growing. As with all house plants, water the orchid until water is flowing from the bottom of the pot. When watering orchids, use water that is warm or room temperature. Feeding every other watering is suggested at a rate of 1/4 tsp. per gallon for most orchids. Plants that are actively growing should be fed 20-20-20. Plants that are completing their new growth should be fed 10-30-20 (high in phosphorus and potassium).
Orchids require different light intensities and indoor (winter) nighttemperatures:
Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums require filtered sun or bright indirect light in winter, shade in summer, and night temperatures of 60-65° F and most of the Cattleyas alliance (Laelia, Sophronitis, etc.) require at least 1/2 day full sun in the winter months, filtered sun during the summer, and a night temp. of 55-60°.
Vandas require a south window and a night temp. of 55-65°. Cymbidiums require as much sun as possible and night temperatures of 50-58°, providing their flower spikes are set. Orchids grow best when summered outdoors. Move all plants out under shade in mid-May. Cymbidiums and Vandas should be gradually moved to a spot where they will receive all but the hot midday sun. They will tolerate even that by late August.
Cattleyas should be gradually moved to receive almost as much sun. Hang them where leaves will shade them at midday. Keep Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums suspended in total shade. Bring phals and paphs in after they have received at least two weeks of 50° night temperatures in autumn, Cattleyas after 45-50°, and cymbidiums 35° F.

Wrinkles on orchid's leaves - Serious help needed!!!!?
I have a Phal and a Dendrobium I purchased about 1-2 months ago. I put them on the window sill (facing west) above my bathtub (so they'll get misted everyday) along with my other 2 healthy and still flowering orchids. The Phal has 4 leaves and 3 of the leaves are now wrinkly. I water every week and fertilize every other week. Can anyone tell me what happened? Was it too dry? Do I water too much? Is it the pot? I use sea-grass-like natural pot and it is pretty large (8"x5"). The Dendrobium started with 3 branches. The leaves on the 2 smaller branches started to yellow and I had to cut them all off. The color of the branches are still green. Only 1 branch now has leaves but they start yellow-ing as well. I use the same caring regime as my other orchids. The pot is exactly the same as the Phal that is wrinkly. There is no wrinkle on the leaves of the Dendrobium. What did I do? Thank you for helpin. P.S. I used different and smaller pots for my other healthy orchids that are still flowerin

Reply:If you used a smaller pot on the other two than that might be your probmlem orchids are very touchy. It also might be that it is getting to much sun, or that you are watering it, make sure that the roots aren't sitting in water. Also the plant might have caught a disease, or some kind of pest. And depending on how long ago that occured it can spread to your other orchids, I recomenf that you go to your local library and check out Orchids for Dummies. It's a great book that explains a lot. Hope this helps!
Reply:i water only when the moss is completely dry and almost crispy - but i think that it likely works out to about once per week - same as you.
are the roots getting enough air? my happy orchids are planted in ceramic pots with holes cut out from top to bottom.
i wonder about your sea grass pot... maybe something from the seagrass doesn't agree with your orchid?
or maybe it got too chilly by the window?
sorry - hope it works out for ya

Black Orchid is about a guy (Justin) who wants to kill himself and he basically describes how he feels and what he's thinking, in a nutshell he makes you look at your life like wow my lifes great compared to his.

If it came out on CD I would try EBAY as there are bound to be copies floating around. Good luck!

How can I dye a zipper or where can I find a zipper that is hard to find. Looking for an Orchid color zipper.?
Looked all over the web, in stores, tried to get special ordered. Looking for a zipper that is 14 inches and invisible type but also in color Orchid. Pulling hair out to find one.
How can I dye a zipper or where can I find a zipper that is hard to find. Looking for an Orchid color zipper.?
The fabric on zippers is usually made of nylon. If this is true for your zipper, then you can dye the zipper with a good dye for nylon. Dye or fabric paint would be better than another sort of paint, because it is far less likely to interfere with the zipper's ability to zip and unzip. You can use an all-purpose dye, such as Rit dye, on nylon, but add vinegar (6 tablespoons per gallon) the the water you dissolve the dye in. You will need to heat the zipper in the dye to get the dye to bond well to the nylon. See the page below for information on dyeing nylon.
If your zipper's fabric is made of polyester, then don't dye it. Most dyes will not stick to polyester at all; the special disperse dyes that do work on polyester are not available locally, but must be purchased by mail order. Instead, use a thin fabric paint which flows like a dye, such as Jacquard's Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint.
Reply:Why don't you just purchase a plain white or silver one and spray paint it? Make sure the zipper is apart so that it will not get painted shut. Also, make sure to use a spray paint that is able to be used on a metal surface. Be sure to allow the paint to dry thoroughly and you may also want to apply a clear coat protectant on it as well.

Also, make sure to use a spray paint that is able to be used on a metal surface. Be sure to allow the paint to dry thoroughly and you may also want to apply a clear coat protectant on it as well.
My kitten broke off a stem containing two flowers and a bud of an orchid.?
Is there any way I can tape/glue it back to the plant and it will still survive? They are the only flowers on the orchid. At the moment it is sitting in water.
My kitten broke off a stem containing two flowers and a bud of an orchid.?
If it is just the flowes from the orchid - then don't worry. Cut orchid flowers last for a very long time. Next, removing the stem containing flowers from an orchid will do no long term damage to your orchid.
Just go and pet your kitten and laugh.
Reply:You cannot reattach it. Put it in a small bud vase and keep the end in water. The flowers will last a long time and if it is developed enough the bud might even open.
Reply:This might be absolutely useless advice as I know nothing about orchids, but I know that when trying to breed hybrid tulips, they used to graft mixed bulbs together using egg white as a binding agent as it dries like glue, is organic and will not poison the plant. As I say, I have no idea if you can "glue" orchids back together, but it might be worth a try?
Reply:No, chalk it up to experience and keep the kitten and the orchid apart.

Does anyone have any ideas for a symbol of peace or balance that could be incorporated with an orchid?
I want to get a tattoo of an orchid to represent strength and beauty but I wanted to incorporate something else into it to represent peace or balance. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!
Does anyone have any ideas for a symbol of peace or balance that could be incorporated with an orchid?
did you like oriental design???
i just think about 2 koi fish (symbolized of strength) with 2 different color (red-blue, black-white....symbolized fire-water or Yin-Yang element) in circular shape / position.....with an orchid in the middle...did you get the idea???
you can email me if you need further suggestion.
hope it will help.
Reply:body of water that is still like a mirror.. could have the orchid behind it [somehow] and the reflection in the water, but you would need something to show that its water not a mirror on its side..
good luck
;)
Reply:dove or there are a couple of native american symbols that stand for peace
Reply:A stylised dove is very easily recognised as peace. Laurel branches are an offering of peace. Yin and Yang for balance. The infinte symbol (think 8 on its side) is good for balance and eternity.

Hello, everyone. I have what I think is called a "jewel" orchid. Its botanical name is "Haemeria discolor".
I understand it to be a terrestrial orchid, so I have it planted in regular potting soil. It's also sitting in moderately bright light. It does not seem to do very well. Can someone give me some pointers?

Need advice on nascar.com to go. it is a application thru verizon, provided by digital orchid. its not working
this application is similar to trackpass online but accessed thru verizon. it is not working now, and efforts to contact digital orchid have been unsuccessful. they will not respond to email or voice mail. it was an awesome app, as it provided live scanner or radio broadcast of all cup races, as well as leaderboard, laps led, qualifying info, etc..... virtually trackpass via cell phone. verizon cannot help. they say it is not available for download now, but since i have the app downloaded already, it should still work. any help you can provide would be great. has anyone had contact with digitalorchid.com?

Does anyone know how to take care of a potted Orchid?
I receiced an Orchid as a house warming gift and it does not have any care instructions with it! I am at a loss.
Does anyone know how to take care of a potted Orchid?
It wants indirect light, moist moss, NOT WET, misting is the best bet, and higher humidity. If you have a bathroom with a window, or a kitchen with one, put it there.
Reply:water it once a week, you can put it under the faucet for a couple of minutes, but the pot has to have good drainage, for that u could use special orchid soil,Orchids don't like to be wet all the time, but they like to be misted specially if they're blooming, the flowers last longer if you spray them, Use orchid fertilizer once a month, following label directions. Don't put them in a sunny spot, is better indirect light for them, clean the leaves w/ a clean, wet paper napkin when they get water spots . I hope this information would help you take care of these beatiful plants.
Reply:the best way to take care of it, water it once a wk. It perfers a sunny location.
Reply:Orchids are difficult, to be honest. Mine prefers morning sun and they do not like sitting in water so try not to water them too much. Once you find a place to put it, try not to move it from that spot because mine didn't seem to like being moved either. Once it has bloomed, if it begins to look dead, prune it down a couple of inches and continue caring for it, it will come back.
I have had my orchids for three years now.
Good Luck
