Is the plant agapanthus related to the orchid family?
Lilly family
Reply:Interesting answers so far. Agapanthus is related to the onion or Alliacea family and is not a member of the orchid family. Endemic to RSA (10 species) and first propagated in Holland in the 1860's. Loosely translated the word Agapanthus is "love flower" (agape -love and anthos - flower)
Reply:Only vaguely. Orchids are in the Orchidaceae, Agapanthus in the Agapanthaceae or Alliaceae (depending on whose taxonomy you like), and used to be considered part of the Amaryllidaceae. More of a "third cousins, twice removed"

relationship than sister groups.
