When the flowers die on the orchid?

do you cut off the stalk , or let it shrivel up? Can I transplant it into a bigger pot at this time?

When the flowers die on the orchid?
Cutting the spent spike will not hurt.

However, you need to know what type of orchid you have and how to deal with repotting.

A bigger pot is not always the answer.

See source for mor information on growing orchids in the home.
Reply:it absolutely depends on the type of Orchid and the conditions that you are keeping it under.

do not repot it or whack at it until you know.

need more info to give you an accurate answer.
Reply:You can cut off the flower stalk, but leave all the foliage. Pull it gently out of the pot. If you see that it's rootbound, then pot it up into just a little larger pot. Fertilize depending on the type of orchid....some need to be fertilized quite often when they are growing vegetively, some like to be pretty starved for nutrition. I wish I could get to Rockefeller Center....Orchid show going on there now.
Reply:I was told "from people in an orchid club" to cut it off to one node. So look at the stalk and look for a node "bump" on it. Then cut it leaving the one node. The orchid may grow another flower from this point if you are lucky. If it dies back then cut it off all the way.

I would wait to transplant it until the stalk dies back all the way. If you transplant it now you are sure to not get another flower to grow off the stalk.
