What causes the undersides of an orchid's leaves to turn purple?

It is clearly a function of the plant, not an external disease or parasite, and it is only the highest leaf that is turning purple. It also seems like it is more purple at night than during the day, and also it is only the underside of the leaf that is purple, the top of the leaf is still green except at the very edge where the leaf is thin enough to see through to the purple.

What causes the undersides of an orchid's leaves to turn purple?
so you say this is a function of the plant? if so then maybe it's just that certain species that exhibits these features. How long ago did you purchase the plant? perhaps within the years the other leaves will turn purplish as well due to maturation. Do you know the species that you're dealing with? that would be of some great help.
