I bought it 1 1/2 years ago and it hasn't re-bloomed. It is extremely healthy and has grown 4 new leaves. It has these long squiggly things coming up and out from the roots, but it doesn't look like flower stalks....or is it? How do they bloom and grow those stalks? When should I expect it to bloom again? Would appreciate thorough answers! Thanks!
How come my Orchid plant hasn't re-bloomed?
Find out what you can about the type of orchid you have. It'll make specifics easier.
In general, in order to bloom, an orchid needs plenty of light. If they're getting that, the leaves tend to be a bit lighter color than if not. Very dark green may be a sign it's not getting enough light.
Also, most of them need a temperature drop of at least 10 degrees at night in order to trigger a bloom cycle. In addition to that, they won't bloom if they're not getting fed occasionally. Those things seem to be the top bloom problems.
I generally figure on some time for a new plant to adapt to the environment before it settles in and blooms regularly. If you've had it for 1 1/2 yrs already, I would expect the problem to be solved by one of the things above.
If you live in an area where it can be outside in the summer, allowing it to stay outside into fall can naturally give it the temp drop it needs.
Reply:Be patient - the squiggly things are roots. The advice I was given was to keep the soil moist and provide the same kind of light as when it was in bloom. It may take anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half to rebloom. As long as the leaves and roots are in good condition do as I am doing - buy an orchid food wherever they sell orchids, and, while you wait, buy another orchid!
